Doctor, you’re so busy taking care of everyone else
But who is taking care of you?
Some days it feels like everyone wants a piece of you.
Your patients or clients, your staff, your board, your kids, your partner, your parents, your community.
You move from consult to consult with barely time to breathe, let alone eat your lunch, work out, read that growing pile of medical journals or follow up on your patients. You’re constantly worried you’ll drop the ball on something important - with devastating consequences for someone you care for, or someone you love.
And where are you in all of this?

You’re stressed out, exhausted and some days you feel like chucking it in.
But then what would you do? You’ve worked too damn hard - and you care too damn much - to throw it all away. And thankfully, there is another way...

After 25 years in clinical practice, with the relentless demands of my career in the frontline of New Zealands Health crisis, the ongoing emotional cost.
I burned out!
The relentless demands of my career in medicine, the ongoing emotional cost of supporting vulnerable patients in extreme distress, and the pressure of trying to be a great mum and partner, while supporting extended family and navigating personal loss, all added up to my perfect storm.

Two decades earlier, my wonderful boyfriend, a smart and caring first-year house surgeon, took his own life. It was a devastating loss that caused me to re-evaluate everything...
I began to question, who cares for the carers?
What continued to break my heart over the next two decades, was that nothing much changed to ensure we take care of our carers.

When my perfect storm unleashed in 2018 and I felt myself pushed way beyond my limits and burning out, I knew I had to make some drastic changes. I resigned from my job and stepped back from medical practice altogether, embarking on an intense period of healing as I rebuilt my life from the ground up.
The Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) course changed my life
I studied for two years with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion founded by Dr. Kristin Neff and Chris Germer, and became a Mindful Self-Compassion Meditation teacher.
As I learned to be kind to myself, I found the courage to embark on a new direction. Yin Yoga had helped me reset my nervous system and recover from burnout, so I trained as a Mindful Yin Yoga Teacher. Together with my clinical knowledge of neuroscience and psychiatry, I developed The Mind Fitness Method to Manage Stress and Prevent Burnout, with my unique seven-step SOARING system of micro-practices.

I’m Dr. Robyn Charlton,
AKA the Mind Fitness Dr.

"I was on the edge of burnout..."

"I was on the edge of burnout, but I didn't know where to start or how to find out which Youtube/internet resource was the most evidence-based. Seeing the post on the NZWIM Facebook page was encouraging as I had the reassurance of the quality and expertise of the facilitator.
As a medical student, it's so hard to find time for mindfulness, so I was appealed to by the short 4-day course and the short podcasts I could listen to on my commute."
